The Ambassador Series | 20 September 2023 Navigating the Future: A Post-G20 Discussion on India-US Bilateral Relations

H.E. Eric Garcetti, US Ambassador to India, spoke on the dynamic momentum that continues to gain traction in the India-US bilateral relations. The session was moderated by Ms Indrani Bagchi, CEO, Ananta Centre and was held at the Ananta Aspen Centre in New Delhi.

Ambassador Garcetti underscored four pivotal areas for ongoing collaboration between India and the US. First, their joint commitment to climate action and carbon neutrality. Second, their strong focus on tech cooperation, including the telecommunications sector, semiconductors, and quantum computing. Third, their shared dedication to advancing the global agenda of inclusion. Fourth, their ongoing collaboration in the realm of defense which prioritizes acquisition, co-production and interoperability equally.

He noted that the India-Middle East-Europe Economic (IMEC) corridor is an ambitious representation of the multipolar world. It will not only facilitate international trade and connectivity but also boost domestic development in all involved geographies. He added that the corridor can benefit from the technological expertise of the United States.

Ambassador Garcetti highlighted India’s G20 success and the role played by this year’s G20 summit in building consensus and accelerating global development. He opined that the G20 demonstrated commitment to ‘One Earth’ with initiatives like the Global Biofuels Alliance, to ‘One Family’ by including the African Union as well as acknowledging territorial sovereignty, and to ‘One Future’ by prioritizing improved infrastructure and introducing the IMEC Corridor. He emphasized that the G20 is no longer just a platform for token inclusion but has evolved into a forum that fosters meaningful dialogue, making it both relatable and interconnected.

During the discussion, Ambassador Garcetti also addressed the ongoing tensions between India and Canada. He highlighted that the US respects territorial sovereignty and endorses justice and accountability, urging everyone to allow the time and space to conclude the investigation before analyzing impact. He expressed that while Canada continues to be a close ally of the US, the India- US relationship is not defined by such incidents.

The Ambassador Series is held regularly by the Ananta Centre. The initiative seeks to engage Ambassadors and heads of foreign missions to facilitate expansion of India’s multi-dimensional ties with countries across the world.
