Mozambique, a neighbour of Tanzania, sought to strengthen business ties with
China during his visit there. Oman, a key power in the Indian Ocean Region,
also engaged with China at first session meeting of the GCC-China Economic and
Trade Ministers on October 22. Meanwhile in interesting moves in Kenya and
South Africa, ex-colonial powers UK and Netherlands faced ire of local population.

Dubai logistics giant DP World signed three contracts
on Sunday (October 22) with the Tanzanian government to operate part of Dar es
Salaam’s port for 30 years under a deal covering all the country’s
ports. The new contracts give DP World exclusive management of four of the city
docks’ 12 moorings and of four more in partnership with the
Tanzania Port Authority. The contracts will be reviewed every five
years, said TPA director general Plasduce Mbossa.

Mozambique eyes closer trade,
investment ties with China

Mozambican Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane Friday expressed
the hope to strengthen economic and trade cooperation in various sectors with
China at an investment promotional event held in central China’s Hubei
Province.
In his address at the event, Maleiane emphasized the
economic strengths of Mozambique and his hope for both countries to deepen
cooperation in sectors like agriculture, tourism, energy, and infrastructure
development to advance the country’s economic diversification.
More than 50 Mozambican officials and business
representatives attended the event. China ranks among Mozambique’s top 10
foreign investors, with 166 approved projects in Mozambique between 2017 and
2022, creating over 19,000 jobs. The total investment value exceeded 1 billion
U.S. dollars, of which over 700 million U.S. dollars is direct investment,
according to data shared by Mozambican Industry and Commerce Minister Silvino
Moreno at the event.
Oman participates in GCC-China

The Sultanate of Oman took part in the first session meeting
of the GCC-China Economic and Trade Ministers, which was held in Guangzhou,
China, on Sunday (October 22). Jassim Mohammed Al Bidaiwi, GCC Secretary
General, also took part in the meeting.
The meeting discussed a set of topics related to the
economic and commercial aspect to enhance joint Gulf-Chinese action, including
the smooth flow of intra-regional trade.

Residents in central Kenya on Friday denounced a lack of
compensation over a devastating 2021 fire which broke out during a British
military exercise, 10 days before a visit by King Charles III.

Madagascan presidential elections have held a major rally in the capital,
Antananarivo, denouncing what they described as “an illegitimate electoral
process. Some 50,000 people attended the gathering called for the by the
“Collective of Eleven”, as they call themselves.They say the
electoral process is being orchestrated to ensure the victory of outgoing
President Andry Rajoelina, who is standing for re-election.

by angry protesters on visit to a slavery museum in South Africa

Angry protesters in Cape Town confronted the king and queen
of the Netherlands on Friday (October 20) as they visited a museum that traces
part of their country’s 150-year involvement in slavery in South Africa.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima were leaving the
Slave Lodge building in central Cape Town when a small group of protesters
representing South Africa’s First Nations groups — the earliest inhabitants of
the region around Cape Town — surrounded the royal couple and shouted slogans
about Dutch colonizers stealing land from their ancestors.
